Since 2009, I've absolutely LOVED PA. The food is great, both dine-in and pickup service is quick and the staff is very nice. I frequent the Haygood location but I've dined at the Shore Dr one, the Jefferson Ave one in Newport News and the one off of Hilltop. I'm a little sad to write this because I never thought that this chain would have that "one location" that you should avoid when patronizing a chain. Sort of like how the Wendy's on Indy Blvd is WAY better than the one on Newtown off the interstate. ANYway, I've had two bad experiences at THIS particular location. The men are marginally nice but the women, a pale, petite brunette (waitress) and this Andrea the Giant chick who sometimes does the seating but usually cashiers. The first crappy experience was when my boyfriend and I visited, the aforementioned waitress showed us to a table and when we requested a booth, she had SO much attitude. The second time was when I visited for lunch with my boss. Again, same rude Amazon chick who doesn't know common courtesy such as "welcome". Not only was there rudeness but THEY BROUGHT ME THE WRONG ORDER!!! I ordered a Burrito San Jose and I was brought a Burrito Espinaca. Granted, I didn't notice right away since I was chatting with my boss but as I continued eating, I noticed the lack of sausage and the spinach. I've never tried the Espinaca burrito before but it was very delicious. This only made me angry because my lunch is only 1/2 an hour. Even if I had said something to the waiter, it was too late to fix it. Oh and when my boss and I left, not even a "have a nice day". This two stars is for the food only. The food is ALWAYS very yummy and is brought out quick but the female staff members--especially Quasi Modo in the front--are just horrible and should be replaced. Go to the Haygood location. The staff is nicer and it doesn't feel like a cafeteria. If you want Mexican food, PA is the bees' knees!!! Just don't go to the Holland Rd location unless you have a high tolerance for rude servers.

Excellent food. It can be kind of loud but if you are going on a nice day, sit on the patio.

Meh. This place comes with a lot of hype... and this was our 3rd try. Service was awful (took forever to order, totally forgot our cheese dip altogether). Their bathroom was disgusting. Smelled worse than a portapotty & was filthy. They have quite the selection of burritos, but I think I'll stick with my usual mexican joint, and will stop trying to "make Plaza Azteca happen" for myself.

So I have been to a different Azteca before and have had no problem ordering a carnitas chimichanga. For some reason this location was not ok with it. How hard is it to substitute carnitas for chicken? I even said I'd pay extra. Finally, after twisting everyone's arm, they obliged. The food was delicious, however. Don't understand why i had to talk to the manager for a simple menu change...that was unecessary. It was not the food it was the service and wish they were a little more accommodating to their guests.

This place is the model for most of the crappy Mexican restaurants in the 757. The formula works like this...sell as much beer and margarhitas as you can while providing a menu of overpriced, industrial grade slop to act as a booze sponge in your belly so you can drink more profit-bearing beverages. A good test is to count how many dishes are drowned in glumps of queso sauce or canned enchilada sauce. If the food is good it doesn't need to be drowned in anything. Dead give away. The epic service fail comes when you are part of a large party and a couple of your cohorts make special requests. Watch what happens when Ms. Vegetarian orders the #13 with no meat and Mr. Fussy Face orders the #8 with no onions. If the restaurant is busy, the plates will likely show up with the offending ingredient because the English-is-not-my-primary-language cooks are trained that "#13 means you add this this and this" and "#8 means you add that that and that." When they get busy their eyes must glaze right over any written instructions below the number. You should avoid this place like discount sushi.

It's like eating in a warehouse!! You could seriously push the tables out and have a game of basketball in there. The food is okay and the drinks are huge. A bit overpriced for what they offer.

First time and last time!! The service was so slow our waiter MAYBE SAID ten words to us. Took twenty mins to order and longer for them to actually pick up the check. The food was ok but nothing amazing . I used to go to the one on providence and they were so much better. They can do better!!!

I used to go here all the time. The food is still the same but the service has sorta fallen off. It went from an outstanding restaurant to just an average one. I've repeatedly had long wait times before server takes our drinks/food orders. They bring you chips and salsa but they used to bring a delicious white sauce that you can only get on request now. The food is really good though, the fried chicken chimichangas are delicious. If you don't mind the lack of service then I'd recommend this place.

Stingy with Salsa??? Its a Mexican restaurant! Ridiculous. Went with a co-worker for lunch. Waitress brings out chips & a tiny silver bowl that is only about 1/3 full of salsa. We ask for a little more salsa. She brings put another 1/3 full bowl. (Seriously there is about 4 Tbsp of salsa in these bowls). We laugh. When our food arrives I ask for a little mkre salsa please, I like salsa with my quesadilla. SORRY, IF YOU WANT MORE SALSA YOU HAVE TO PAY EXTRA. Im looking at her (its not her fault) like she is kidding, but she is not. So we both choose to eat our food without salsa & NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN. Such a bad policy. Is salsa really worth losing customers? Especially based on the recent reviews.... The service was really bad. After she told us no more salsa, she never came back. She did not refill out tea even once. She never checked on us to see if we needed anything. Food was average. No need to go back, there are better mexican restaurants close by with better food, atmosphere & better service.

I would give 2.5 actually I think they are better than 2 but not a 3. This has been my go to place for about 16 years well before the new building. The food was always good or at least better than anything else in Hampton Roads. The last 6 months quality has been on the decline so I am now in search of a new place to frequent. It seems most the problems started with the new menu they are using food isn't as good as before and the prices increased. Let me say now if the food was still good I would pay the new price I just don't believe in rising prices and letting the food go down the crapper. All said they had a long go but I don't feel they are worth going to any longer.

I was 100% underwhelmed when I ate here this past weekend. This is totally not the place to fulfill my frequent need for Mexican cuisine because it just, wasn't that great. Chips were stale. Salsa was flavorless. I ordered queso so I could dip my chips into something tasty, and got something that tasted like liquid butter instead.. I guess this could be a good thing depending on who you are, but I wanted cheese, not butter. My husband and I both got chimichangas, because I don't like ground beef, I like shredded, and they didn't have this, so I went with the Mexican version of a corndog, which you shouldn't be able to go wrong with, right? Wrong. Good grief, this thing was gross. It had zero substance except for greasy meat and more of the butter they try to call cheese drizzled over it. Blah. My 2 year old didn't even want a bite, in fact, he threw his samplings on the floor and asked for a cookie. Our waitress was totally rushing us. Asking if we were ready to order 4 different times when we hadn't even been in the restaurant for 10 minutes is too much and if you know me, this pisses me off more than anything at restaurant. I am a mom, I am busy, I don't have the opportunity to eat out as much as I'd like and when I do, I DO NOT want to feel like I am being rushed out the door. On top of all this, our bill was nearly $50. FIFTY EFFING DOLLARS FOR SHITTY FOOD AND SERVICE. Ugh. I might like this place if I had 14 margaritas in my belly because at that point everything is delicious and zero shits are given about much, but I am pregnant and that is not happening today, tomorrow, or, ever. I will take my money elsewhere.\ Next!

Have been here several times and not sure why I keep giving them a try. Service is always horrible and food is non-impressive. Take the advice of other reviewers and don't waste your money or time.

Interesting...seeing all the reviews, it sounds like this place is pretty aweful, but as for my personal experience, it's been good. I prefer this Mexican restaurant over some of the places I have been to in the Hampton roads, the food is way tastier and the drinks are delicious. Mexican restaurants tend to be pretty expensive back home in Cali, so this isn't a shocker to see prices this high. Although I do agree they should be lower......so I can drop by more often ha! To me, the flavors in the food is a little closer to home, it's our go to spot with my husband. We will see what happens next time, hope the food is just as delicious as we know it to be.

This used to be my go-to Mexican spot years ago...not so much anymore. My friend introduced me to El Taco Loco...now THAT is some good Mexican food. Plaza Azteca...they remodeled awhile back and it looks nice, but the food and service is lackluster. Last time I went, our waiter mysteriously disappeared...I think his shift ended and he just went home without transferring us to another waiter. My friend and I eventually had to wave someone down to get more water and our check. There was barely any cheese on the nachos, and I'm a "more-cheese-the-better" kind of person. The drinks were good, I'll give em that. I've talked to some other people that have been to Plaza Azteca recently and they all pretty much feel the same way I do. Do yourself a favor...don't come here. You can get much better Mexican food elsewhere in Virginia Beach.

Really busy place, didn't except to spend almost $40 on just 2 main course and 2 alcoholic beverages.. The services is really friendly and our waitress was really nice.

  • Noella M.

The go-to spot for Virginia Beach Mexican. There is usually no wait for a table and the staff is always friendly. The staff loves it if you speak Spanish with them too. My usual order is either the taco salad or the Burrito Mex. If you respond well to pictures like I do, it is one of the burritos pictured in the menu. Also, try the fresh table side guacamole, which is delicious on everything!

Queso fundio dip and Cucumber mojito's is where you need to start your journey when you come to Plaza Azteca. So don't try the drink with the grapefruit in it...yes I did try it and gag!!! The cucumber mojito is very light and refreshing for a nice warm summer day. So grab it and get out to the patio and order the queso fundido.... The queso fundido dip is so fdelicious and totally not what I expected...is is this glorious skillet of cheese and spicy sausage greezy goodness! The fajita's we got where pretty good, I have had better. Overall, ok service, great patio space, great drinks and ok food (the chips and salsa/dip aren't a factor cause really, can you *eff those up?)

Simply the best enchiladas ever. I always get the enchiladas trio. The fresh guacamole is delicious, but by the time they get to your table, you're half way through your meal. At that point I don't want to eat an appetizer. Also, the white sauce that comes with the tortilla chips is a hit or miss since sometimes they bring it to your table and sometimes they don't. They also barely give you enough salsa and rarely refill your drinks. They do promptly bring you the bill though. Service sucks, but the food is great.

  • Alison M.

We love this place. The large size means there is not a wait unless you go at the heart of the dinner rush. Their chips and salsa come with free "white sauce" which I love. We tend to either get fajitas for two or the burrito San Jose which is filled with chorizo, rice, beans, and covered in queso (YUM). Service is fairly good - it just depends on the level of competence of your server, like most places, but overall we're usually well taken care of. They have a nice bar and have several mounted wall flat screen TVs and usually show every football game on Sundays (which my husband loves). Prices are fair but have increased a few times since we moved here.

Today was not a good day. My wife and I were regulars here until today. So my son and I decided to go here for dinner. He wanted chips and dip so we got here around 6:55 just before the dinner rush . We got our table and waited... After about 15mins or so we finally got our chips, I mentioned to the waitress we were ready to order too and can we have some white sauce... So she decided to just walk away but she did return 10-15 mins after with our white sauce so I mentioned again we were ready to order and she said "hold on a minute" and walked away again. After 10mins of waiting again she finally took our order... After patiently waiting 45 minutes and on our second bowl of chips, we finally got our food. Very disappointed at how long it took, not once did the waitress mention "sorry for the wait, it should be right out" she forgot a couple things such as a spoon, extra flour tortillas etc. instead of getting things all at one time she got things one by one. It was quite strange. So after 20 mins of finally getting everything my son and I needed, We finally started eating. 2 tables of 4 left as soon as we got my food and did I mention they got there 20mins after I sat down. Food was good as usual but it was lacking something. After my son and I finished eating I asked the waitress for an extra order of flour tortillas, a box and the check. She returned and gave me what I needed. I did notice she didn't charge me for extra tortillas and my beer, to my mind I thought that was cool but when I opened the extra flour tortillas I wanted, it was all corn tortillas. At that point I just wanted to leave. I paid my bill and decided I'm no longer returning to Plaza Azteca and found my new spot which is El Taco Loco.

So the Wife and I rolled into this Location of Plaza Azteca early tonight for some apps and a Margarita! We got the cheese dip, queso fundido basically chorizo sausage and cheese and of course table side Guac!! All were super yummy and the service was primo if I had a bad thing to say it would be it would have been nice to get all dishes at once so we could intermix! Early in the eve is a great time for this place!! One other issue for people who design restaurants stop with the high ceilings already the noise and echo's are horrible

I had placed an order a few weeks ago while looking for a mexican restaurant in Virginia Beach and found that this restaurant has decent reviews. While trying it out for myself I was not impressed with either the customer service, food or attention to detail. My experience there is comprised of a take out order for two enchiladas with rice and beans on a late Friday night at 9:30. The waitress didn't do a final check on my food to ensure I had a plastic fork or napkins. She was flirting with her waiter-boyfriend the entire time I was waiting for my order in front of other customers too, that had placed take out orders. I had to ask for the fork, napkins. Great place for people to get hammered (drunk), would not recommend this mexican restaurant to anyone visiting that wants quality service or food.

Alright, I'm from Texas so I should have known better to think I would find anything remotely close to great Mexican food down here in Va Beach. This place isn't horrible, just different from what I'm used too. First off, the service is great! The chips and salsa are made fresh and awesome! The food on the other hand tasted like it was prepared with cheap canned stuff. Their burritos are tortillas stuffed with ground beef and topped with sauce, that's it. What happened to the veggies? Their tacos are prepared the same way but topped with cheese and no veggies. Tostadas are no different, ground beef and topped with cheese. None of their dishes stand out and seemed to be prepared like drive thru fast food. Seriously disappointed, I wouldn't recommend this place to tourist.

This is a restaurant I will DEFINITELY NOT patronize again. First of all, the menu is limited. I went to a smaller Mexican restaurant a week earlier and ordered a vegetable quesadilla. I figured, since this was a larger chain, I would be able to get a similar order only better. I WAS SO WRONG. Not only did they not have a similar item, the other choices were limited in variety. I believe in quality over quantity and a big fancy menu without variety and over priced selection is a waste of plastic. Next, the service SUCKED. When a server doesn't know when it's time to refill a beverage they shouldn't be working. And that's the kind of service I got. Lastly, this is the first Mexican restaurant that CHARGES for chips(you know the "free" ones they give when you sit down?)Well, after the 3rd refill they charge. Who knew? Certainly not me. I have dined in many Mexican restaurants from here to Texas and I HAVE NEVER BEEN TOLD I WOULD BE CHARGED FOR CHIPS. When I spoke to the manager about this, he acted like he didn't care when I said something like that will keep me from coming back. As a matter of fact, he just walked off mid-sentence when I told him. Very rude! Bottom line; DO NOT eat here. It's not worth all the money they charge.

We were lucky to get great service on a super busy night when we had a party of 10. Definitely get the fresh Guacamole, it is worth it.

Table Side Guac is spot on! Tends to not be as spicy as I'd want even when I ask but still good. The food is usually quick and delicious. The place tends to get insanely busy during holidays and peek dinner hours on weekends. The prices are decent 8-13$ a plate w/ Giant Beers or Jumbo Margaritas are decent prices. To go service is nice as well quick and comes with the usual chips/salsa/white sauce.

  • Mai H.

I've never seen someone as rude as the hostesses . We waited for an hour. Every 30 min we kept checking just to see how long we had to wait. After an hour I asked the hostess again this she asked me to look around that no one is moving, so I told her that has been 2 long of a wait. She took our name off the list while I was still standing there. How rude. So we waisted an hour for nothing. This was for a party of 5 1/5.

Great Texas fajitas here, not quite as good as Mi Casita's though. The table made guacamole is excellent, but overall a pretty pricey meal for four. We were at $53 for lunch, which included a kids meal, 2 specials, soft drinks, fajitas and guac.

After 5 years in Hampton Roads, I've learned to live with sub par Mexican food, and Plaza Azteca is the just the best of the mediocre. It was their terrible customer service yesterday that put the nail in the coffin. In all honesty, we don't expect much, but edible food is kind of the point, so we were pretty unimpressed by the manager's refusal to let our companion switch her meal when she found it rather gross (fish tacos smothered in processed cheese). He argued with us, said that the menu said what it was, so pretty much oh well for you, and then said if she ordered something else, it would get taken out of the server's pay. In the end, they didn't even take the uneaten item off the bill.

  • A J.

When I first ate at this restaurant about a year ago, the food was awesome! I went again a few weeks ago and the food was HORRIBLE! Have they switched up the menu, changed management, etc!? I will not being going back to this place.

  • Matthew C.

On my most recent visit I received absolutely terrible service. The server was only there to take our order and never returned, not even to explain her absence. Countless other servers walked past and also ignored our needs. I consider myself an understanding customer because I'm also a server but this place was seriously frustrating and doesn't deserve your patronage. Although the food was what you'd expect, the service is what destroyed this experience.

The building and decoration are nice and fairly clean, the food is just not very good. Maybe it's just because I expect better being from California. I do not recommend Plaza Azteca.

    (2)
  • Dennis S.

Great food, service and atmosphere..... the management team and wait staff was working really hard to make sure the time spent here was an enjoyable one..... I've tried to find other restaurants that have the spicy white dipping sauce to no avail....

  • Mike V.

The Mexican food is ok. The people seem attentive to your needs and gets the food to you quickly. I've been to Guadalajara, Mexico and the food their is extraordinary delicious. So maybe the expectations for that authentic taste is at a higher level. Nonetheless, if your looking for a quick Mexican type of meal that will satisfy the taste buds then Plaza Azteca can be for you.

Will not be returning to this or any other Plaza Azteca in the future. On the way into the restaurant, my husband was carrying our 2 year old daughter and slipped and fell on ice. The ice was on the walkway marked with white lines and was not easily visible. We brought this hazard to the manager's attention and he told us it wasn't his problem and he can't control the weather. I told him we could control that we would not be returning and he rolled his eyes and walked away! All he needed to say was, sorry this happened and we will take care of it (whether he would really have or not). We brought this up so he could fix the problem and not have any other customers hurt, but obviously that doesn't matter to him.

Like I said in my Jessy's Taqueria review, I am not a big fan of Mexican food. Well, I wasn't at least...but as of late, I've been eating a lot of it! Plaza Azteca is a very popular place to go in the 757. It's fairly priced and it's almost always quite lively. The food is pretty good too -- I def prefer Plaza Azteca over Guadalajara's. My only complaint? Their service! The food comes out fast, but as far as ordering drinks/food, getting the check, etc... BLEH! But I'll be back.. lol.

Talk about about a place that satisfies the taste buds. My wife and I were with friends after church with killer appetites that only a long winded preacher could manifest. The chips were great and both the salsa and white dip were good. Of course, at this point I could have eaten fried caterpillars like they were seasoned home fries. However, they were good nontheless. As lunch arrived, my mouth was watering so bad I had to stuff a few napkins in my mouth (not really). I mean who would do that, honestly. That's weird at like Mr. Bean level right there. Anyway, the food arrived and the smell would wake up the smallest appetite. The fried rice was cooked perfectly as was the seasoned chicken and beef in the fajitas. The tortillas were soft and warm as you would expect to act as your little food pocket of awesomeness. The veggies were also good, but I would prefer a more generous portion to even out the dish. I would recommend this place as I will be back with friends and family. Hope to see you there!

They have definitely done a lot to Plaza Azteca. I used to come here when it was the old building back in high school. They tore that down and built this pretty big building. It is really spacious inside and the area to eat outside is pretty nice (although there isn't really much of a nice view.. just Holland Road). The service is quick and the food is pretty good. I had a chicken and spinach enchilada and it was pretty tasty! The enchilada was green (I know it sounds weird), but the spinach flavor was definitely apparent. Their margaritas are pretty good too. They are strong on the tequila flavor, but in a GOOD way, but be warned.. I had the "wine-effect" from drinking one of their strawberry margaritas. ;-) P.S. The white sauce with the tortilla chips is always a win compared to the red one.

Azteca is a chain . . . some are better than others . . . this one definitely falls short. There were no shortage in wait staff except for the area that several people were sitting in ( like myself ). 8+ wait staff sat in the entrance area just dicking about with the manager. . . about 3 waiters took the restaurant. Floors has a slick, greasy feel as if they haven't been cleaned for sometime. Last customer's table leftovers stayed for almost an hour at many of the tables. There looked to be one bus staff person well overwhelmed. Given the grime looming on the table a positive was at least the table was clean. So service was really sad for a chain restaurant, I would question the quality of the management if they even care about their establishment. Food is what gets you into the door and that was mixed. First - way kewl for guacamole guy - he did well at preparing the fresh green goo of tastiness. Chips arrived quickly as well of beverage request. Wait 20 minutes later and get to order . . . another 20 minutes, empty iced tea glass and get lunch. Lunch was nothing to differentiate from a fast food chain that once sported a Chihuahua ( except the fresh guacamole ). Bottom line : would I suggest this Azteca - NO - service is so poor and care for the job don't bother . . . Food : NO - service and mediocre lunch don't bother with making the effort to stop.

The cheese dip is delicious just about everything else is average. Tableside guacomole while being fresh was very bland and flavorless. The meal itself was OK. The tortilla on the enchiladas was as hard as a rock. Not good at all. The cheese dip by itself saves this place from a one star.

YUCK YUCK YUCKY! The food was terrible. It was flavorless and tasteless. Taco Bell is better that this place. The presentation terrible. The only thing they have on their side is the fact that I was seated fast and the food came fast. Will never EVER go there again. It was my first and last time.

3 things: Seafood Chimichangas, CA Fish Tacos and ole Guacamole! I can't find any chimichangas here in CA that's even close to the ones they serve, it drives me nuts! The fish tacos are good but not a good as the chimichangas. Their Margarita is average but their Mojito rocks! I love the location, the interior decor and the ambience. The service can be improved but at least their waitstaff speaks good English. I wouldn't coming here every now and then but my fav'rite Mexican joint is here in CA and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world :)

My friend and I used to go to this restaurant every week for our lunch break. It's right down the street, the food is good and the service is super speedy. It's the perfect place for an hour lunch if you have a boss who's a stickler on time but you need some serious grub to finish out your day. This may sound weird, but I really feel like the quality of the food diminished when Plaza Azteca moved from a small old building to the new, bigger building right next to it. My tacos weren't as spicy. My salsa didn't have that kick. Even my sweet tea seemed to have lost its punch. I'll still drop by this Plaza Azteca from time to time, but it's no longer my weekly Mexican food fantasy.

Service is usually pleasant, but tonight something was amiss. The hostesses were the unfriendliest, pissed off people ever! Our hostess actually threw our menus on the table and said, "there you go." No smile...nada anything remotely pleasant! Our waitress, on the other hand, was great. On a previous visit, the food took forever. This time, not such a long wait. With the very sour hostesses and slow service, I'm guessing they're having some internal probs. We all had fajitas....shrimp were huge...steak was a little overcooked, but edible. The salsa was on the runny side. Not sure if we'll return here for our next "mexican fix"...might give mi casitas a try as per someone else's Yelp!

This was the first Mexican restaurant we tried when we moved to the area in 2009. We frequented it until we discovered El Taco Loco. Haven't been back since, mostly because I just LOVE tacos, and there isn't much taco variety at Plaza Azteca. If I'm in the mood for Mexican other than tacos, this is a viable option. The menu offers a lot of variety and there are two locations very close to our house, so I am sure we will eventually get back there. The Burritos Fajitas are delicious and the service was always good.

  • Greg F.

Ok, I have eaten at two locations and felt the same about both. This is without a doubt the worst Mexican food I have ever had. The beans were like dog food, the beef was greasy and bland, the chicken was dry and the fajitas tasted like they came from the freezer section of a supermarket with the worst cuts of meat. This place is garbage!

Crazy busy, but amazing food. This location is really big which helps to accommodate the masses of people that come here. We come here a lot with friends and I'm never disappointed. Awesome chips/salsa, great margaritas and the best Mexican rice ever! BOOM!

Nomally the food is good but tonight the service sucked. We waited 2 hours and our food never came out even after telling the waiter several times to check on our order. I finally walked out....I won't be back.

Gross. I can't believe that first review-- "one of the first Mexican restaurant I ever ate at" and then followed by, "the food is by the book Mexican." I'm sorry, I don't know what book you are going by. The most authentic Mexican aspect was the Corona. We had a pretty good idea of what was to come when were driving by and noticed that freakin Qdoba was voted "best of." Yikes. We got there and it seemed nice, but then the salsa came out, and it was clearly from a bottle. Then, the guacamole arrived. The consistency was SO smooth--no avocado chunks present. We ordered from the vegetarian section. Yes, there was fish tacos listed in the veg. part. Last time I checked fish wasn't a plant, but hey, what do I know? Then, the worst part. Our entrees arrived and it was like we ordered off the kids menu. I was very confused, because the dish was supposed to include a veggie enchilada, a burrito, and a quesadilla. The quesadilla came on a separate plate, and the burrito and enchilada were together swimming in a brownish Chef Boyardee sauce. NO lettuce, tomato, sour cream, rice, beans, or anything else that usually comes standard. Um, what? We each took a bite and agreed that even though we were hungry, wouldn't waste our time. My date spoke with the gm, and he assured us that the food was fresh, but where are we from? Everyone in the area just loves the place. Is everyone taste-blind? Our waiter acknowledged that when they've ventured in authentic Mexican territory, people haven't liked it. Is it true that no one around here likes real Mex???

I have eaten at every location they have, including the ones in Hampton, and this is byu far the best one. Since they bnuilt the new location it has only become more well rounded with a much better menu. This is a must for mexican food.

Family favorite for years! Great food, price and service. Only missing one star due o the fact that they are awful with reservations. Twice I have been with a party that has made reservations and we still had to wait an hour or longer!

Loved the chips, salsa and guacamole but that's about it. I had a lunch combo plate with a beef taco, chicken burrito and rice. The taste wasn't very appealing at all. Tasted a bite of the seafood burrito and it was drowning in a salty sauce.

AWFUL! Waited an hour before we saw our server. Food was not great and overpriced. My friend ordered a margarita from the drink menu. Priced were not listed, but we never expected it to be $17!!!! Terrible. When we complained, the owner said "if you don't like it, you can go somewhere else". Jerk

If you want bad service come here, me and my family came here because we were out of power. Id rather of had bread and butter in the dark it was that horrible. All of are orders were messed up, and I spoke with the manager and he said don't come here if you want a five star service then he said he was the owner. He should of keep that one to himself. The waitress came to our table 3 times within an hour and a half, but she had no problem goofing off with her friends at the table behind us

I have driven by this place several times and didn't even know it was a restaurant. However once inside you are really treated to a larger than life view. It seems huge inside. High ceilings and tastefully decorated. It lives up to it's name if you are talking about design. That in my opinion is where it stopped. The waitress was friendly but got my drink order wrong from the get go. UN-SWEET tea please - and I get a mouthful of sugary water with lemon. Then when we gave our order she repeated it wrong back to us. Thankfully when the food was delivered the order was right. The hard shell taco was mostly cheese and my enchiladas had that frozen cardboard taste to them. I was not impressed. Cheese dip? A bit bland, and I don't need a gallon of it. After 2 baskets of tortilla chips we hardly scratched the surface. The place was relatively empty so seating was not an issue. However parking was. You have to drive in a complete box just to get to the restaurant. A bit annoying when you pull in and the restaurant is right there but you are forced to make a series of left turns just to pull in. Bottom line: Not expensive but not good enough to return. Maybe for drinks but not food. Oh on one last note, I don't need to watch Oprah interviewing a woman who's face was eaten off by a chimpanzee while eating my food.

Last night was the first time my family ate in the new building on Holland Road and it probably will be my last. The building is nice however, the food and service is not up to standards. I ordered a Califorinia Fish Taco and received 3 warm corn torillas in aluminum foil with very small portions of fish with lettuce and sour cream on the side. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND someone from Plaza Azteca eat at El Tapatio's on General Booth Blvd and take a lesson in quality food service.

I had the most awful experience at this location -- not the first time I visited a Plaza Azteca, and not the first time I was put off. This time we were treated to a way-over-the-top rude waitress who would apparently lose any memory of our conversation 12 seconds after we ordered everything. Our drinks came incredibly late, we had to remind her to PUT IN our dinner order, which by the time we could've flagged down the guacamole cart (ourselves-- for what we intended as an appetizer) we had finished. On top of the basic neglect and horrendous attitude, at the end of our lovely evening their credit card machine went down. Apparently they have only one. They didn't tell us until they had already taken our cards, and then proceeded to hold them hostage while this issue went on FOR AN HOUR. No offers to discount anything, no free drink while we waited, I'm not even sure the girl apologized for the huge inconvenience. The food was decent, and "decent" is really just not worth it.

My family (including two children) enjoyed this restaurant. Having lived in California, we manage our expectations when heading out for Mexican in eastern VA. We found the portions generous, and the food fresh and tasty. The real star of the evening was the service: outstanding. We have had a few outings in a row where the service let us down, but Plaza Azteca (Holland Rd.) really came through. Will definitely go again.

Plaza Azteca is decent but certainly not great or authentic Mexican food. I tend to stay away from Mexican restaurants with more than one location, not to mention restaurants as big as this one is, but we were meeting friends while visiting Va Beach, so what are you going to do. I thought the salsa was good - it didn't seem to me like it was from a bottle, rather it was blended tomatoes, onions, chilies, cilantro, etc and definitely was chunky. The "White Salsa" was disgusting. I can't even describe it, other than to say yuck. I had Chicken tacos on Soft Corn Tortillas, which were pretty good. The chicken wasn't dry and flavorless like most Mexican places and the corn tortillas were soft and flavorful. The tacos could have had more cheese, tomatoes or salsa on them, but other than that, I was thought they were fine. The rice on the side was disappointing - greasy and not much in the way of taste, but the refried beans were tasty. Again, not great, but adequate. The service was good - our waiter was attentive and efficient. I'm not sure I would go back here unless we are meeting people - hopefully I can find a more authentic Mexican place, but if not, this one is much better than Qdoba or Chipotle.

I have to give Plaza Azteca 3 stars. I've been there quite a few times and they usually do a great job. Very good about getting drinks, chips, guac. The last time I was there they totally screwed up my order and didn't really do anything to help. Also, the waiter kind of avoided our table for the rest of the night. I don't know what the deal was, but I haven't been back since. It really just put me in a bad mood.

I am honored to write the first review of this fine, fine, fine dining experience known as Plaza Azteca. It was one of the first Mexican restaurant I ever ate at and one that I always meet good friends at for dinner when I come down to Virginia Beach to visit. The food is by the book Mexican and pretty much about as tasty as it gets. The white salsa is straight out of my dreams, I could eat it every day (and for awhile back in the day I was). Service in this place is unreal. It's like they internally know when you run out of water, chips and finish your food because they are they to address your every needs the minute they arise. Ahhh and their sweet tea is what I have come to refer to as "The Blood of Christ". Absolute greatness! I'm going back down in a few days, you know I'm gonna be eating it up there.

2.5! If you like your sour cream with a side of tortillas, protein, rice and some bag lettuce, this is the lunch spot for you! Seriously, my lunch was DRENCHED in sour cream. Their menus do warn that each lunch combo comes with it. Had I know it would be a whole gallons worth, I might have said please hold. Otherwise...food was okay. Nothing to really scream about. Lunch prices are cheap. It's kinda dark in there... lots and lots of seating though, as well as ample parking. Service was fine, but we were there for a lunch meeting so they tried not to interrupt too much.

We came here for a quick lunch this past Saturday and it was typical American mexican food. Service was nice and quick. I got a lunch special of some type of burrito with rive and beans. I love the cheese sauce that's on top of the burritos so goooood. My boyfriend had a big ole burrito that was supper tasty. Everything came out together and on time, definitely an improvement from our last experience.

Yummy Mexican food!!! I always get the San Jose burrito with no chicken add chorizo and no pico on top. Me and the old man always get this and just get 2. Their margaritas are ON POINT!!! Perfectly made. Not too salty not over powered with margarita mix or tequila. Just perfect and TONS of flavor boosters. Came here on cinco de mayo.... It was chaos!!! 1.5 hours wait for a table but there was an outside drink pit and a live Mexican band hahaha it was fun. Their queso dip and nachos are really good too. Yum... When you come here wear your stretchy pants cuz you're gunna leave really full and happy!!!

The biggest reason for the downgrade here is the sanitation. Any restaurant that I go to and the menus are greasy and tacky with food residue by lunch tells me they are not paying attention to base sanitation. The menu is one of the first things patrons see and if it is nasty, who knows what poor sanitation practice is going on back in the kitchen. It is a shame too. The price is low and the Mexican cuisine has both variety and good taste. But I just can't get past the nasty sanitation.

Been here plenty of times and it's decent. Not the best, not the worst Mexican restaurant. Pros: It's pretty- especially since the renovation a while back. Good location - Holland/Indep - middle of Va Beach Cons: Can't do reservations. Always expect a wait on the weekends Prices are a bit steeper than other Mexican restaurants.

Been here a couple times now, and I tell you what... consistency is the key. I love me some Pork Carnitas, and they get the braising RIGHT!!! I hate when the pork is dry and tough, and that is not a problem here. All the veggies are fresh and everything in clean and roomy. It's great not to be bumping elbows with the folks at the next table. I know I will be back!!!

I placed an order to go for 3 orders of churros. I wish he had said they were a version of the dessert and not what is served at most other Mexican places. Anyway... he didn't realize I said 3 vs 1 and had to charge my card twice. I waited awhile for them. They tasted okay. Overpriced for what we received. Won't be back. I prefer the less expensive, less fancy Mexican places that are dives vs overpriced foo foo.

The service is lackluster, the wait staff is more keen on cleaning up so you can go, they don't check on you. They have an odd bakery case that looks like a jewelry display stand. The food is eh. I just was not blown away after coming here several times it should be way better. Besides posting on your FB page video screen shots of customers who didn't pay is a bit ridiculous. I don't blame them. I'd rather go somewhere else.

Serving an American bastardization of Mexican food, you'll be starting off with some stale chips and two kinds of dipping sauce. One that tastes like mayonnaise with a hint of anti-freeze, and the other tastes like vine ripened tomatoes and feet. Drinks are served in 55 gallon drums of 99% ice. For the main course, you have a choice of 12 different names for a burrito. Dessert is a delicious assortment of 10 year old vending machine candy. ENJOY!

Plaza Azteca is usually my go-to Mexican place. They have a lot of options and a pretty good drink menu. The service is decent. They're pretty attentive with the salsa and refilling your drinks. Their portions a big and very filling--I usually have to take a good part my meal home. I like the atmosphere. It's pretty casual and laid-back. Definitely one of my choices for after-work dinner and drinks.

What happened to Plaza Azteca? This used to be the spot for Mexican food in Virginia Beach. Now this place is hotgarbage.net ! I've been to various Mexican establishments around Hampton Roads, and Plaza Azteca was the first restaurant that had me hooked. For many years I've come to this place (well, not this one, but the one on Independence...same thing there), and it would be the first place I'd recommend anyone visiting to go. When they went under new management, the quality of the food started declining rapidly. My last visit (and I literally mean LAST) was simply the worst ever! The chicken chimichanga that I have grown to love because of P.A. was now dry and straight nasty! The wait staff was so busy that (when I complained about it) it took 20 minutes for a "manager" to come over to address it. And on top of all that, my wife had to complain that the bathroom was so disgusting, that we had to forget about them reimbursing anything so we can leave and get them home to handle their business! The prices are outrageous, the food is hitting on ZERO, and it stays packed (in my honest opinion, because of the drink specials) so much so that you are practically sitting up on each other. This particular P.A. is on my do not return list. I really hope that their establishment on Laskin Road does not lose the quality that the Holland and Independence restaurants have. We shall see!

I have yet to go to the new one on Providence but, the Holland Road location is the best one I have ever been to. They constantly have deals on drinks and have a wide array of beverages. If you want to go just for drinks this is a great place to go. On weekends and nights this place can get crowded and even worse in the summer. Though that is the case I haven't had to wait long when it came to getting a table even with a large party. During the summer it's best to get a table outside as it's not as crowded or loud. The wait staff is pretty nice, they come and check on you and refill drinks when need be. The food comes out pretty fast even when the restaurant is busy and the food is always hot when served. I usually get a burrito or the arroz con pollo with peppers and onions added. My best friend and I love to go here and we can't wait till next time.

Great Mexican food and ambiance. Just don't go during dinnertime on Friday and Saturday. My party of five had to wait an hour for a table. The service was okay. The place was just to crowded. I've been there for lunch and it's totally different. Drinks are priced pretty good.

Plaza Azteca gets the dubious honor of being the worst service in Virginia Beach that I've had. I arrived and was seated immediately in a little corner booth. I looked over the menu, even though I had every intention of ordering a Chori Pollo. I put the menu down, in what I felt was the universal symbol of, "Hi, you can come talk to me now." And waited. For about 7 minutes. Had it been swamped, no problem, I get it. But it was Super Bowl Sunday and there were about 3 other people eating. There were two assemblies of wait staff hanging out on the floor talking to each other. Finally, I got up and asked the maître d' if someone would be by to take my order. She apologized and a minute or so later a very jovial person comes by and takes my order. The chips were a little oily for my taste, but typical of 'Virginia Beach Mexican' food. I had to ask twice for white sauce. After about 15 minutes, my food arrived; which is kinda weird for Mexican, I'm used to getting it fairly quick, but maybe it was a good thing! It wasn't, the cheese that is normally melted and gooey was congealed on top of my refried beans, leading me to believe it was sitting in a pick-up window for some time. Also, the melted cheese under the chicken had a bit of a skin from cooling. Last straw was they didn't refill my diet coke. Ugh! Again, if they were slammed, maybe. But I had to wave my arms wildly to get them to even look my way. There are like 25 Mexican eateries within 30 miles of here, I would recommend any one of them until the service issues here are resolved.

There are a few Plaza Azteca's in the area, but this location is my favorite. Last night, we got our food probably what felt like only 5 minutes after we ordered. I got the seafood chimichanga and I was not disappointed one bit. The shrimp and crab were juicy. It had a lot of sauce, but not too much, to give it just the right amount of flavor. The only disappointment I had was the white dip that comes with chips. Normally, it's perfect but last night it was just too creamy. Plus, we have to ask for it now when before they used to give it along with the salsa. This restaurant may not be the best in the area, but it's still my go to spot when I want Mexican food.

  • Clare S.

We are never going back. Service was awful and the food was worse. Not sure if they're trying to cut corners to pay off debt, but their food is definitely different from what it was when they were a smaller and less fancy restaurant. The table side guac was great but who doesn't have that now days?!

I don't know why people rave about this place. It's just OK. Went during the week at lunch and never felt so RUSHED. They just wanted people to eat and GET OUT. Never returned. Food was average.

  • Andy H.

The food is great but the service is terrible. I have been coming here for 15 years and this will be the last time I dine here. There are a lot of other choices for Mexican food in Virginia Beach that are just as good, if not better, that have better service and cost less.

  • Anne F.

Food gets a four, service always gets a three from me unfortunately. Their chips and salsa is always a good start. They also give you the white sauce which I could practically eat with a spoon. Not really, but really though! I love their guacamole! Their food is great, not super spicy, but very good. The portion sizes are excellent too. They have all the dishes you would expect from your typical Mexican chain and it tastes about how you would expect your typical Mexican chain to taste. I prefer this location to the other ones in the area for the taste. However, I always have an issue with the service. It doesn't matter if I am with a large group or if it is just myself and my husband. I will either get extremely slow nonexistent service or our server will just be rude and act like we are inconveniencing them. I swear one time our server was intentionally avoiding our table. The drinks from the bar are good, and usually I get great service from the bar tender when I am just there for drinks after work.

Gross!!! Okay so I seriously hate this place how can you call yourself Mexican if you don't make your own tortillas. I mean everything to do with Mexican food is in some kind of tortilla and you buy them from a store it shows they taste like plastic. I can make better Mexican food then anything on their menu prob because I buy fresh ingredients.

  • Kaitlin E.

I'm updating my review from two years ago to knock it down a star. The food was bland, the flour tortilla was soggy, the enchilada was all dried up. The server kept rushing us to order. The food arrived to the table in about three seconds. I'm certain that bc it was tonight's special (combo #11) that they must have made like 100 in advance and sat them under some warming lamps. We went around 6:00pm on Saturday for dinner and there were many empty tables. I've been here at least a dozen times over the years and there is always a line out the door for ppl waiting to be seated. It's obvious there has been a decline in this place and it shows by it's lack of business. I've been looking forward to trying the fresh guacamole for a long time now and we finally did. I ordered it "medium" and there was no spice to it at all whatsoever. Bland, much like our entrees. Super bummed about whatever happened to this place.

This used to be our go to Mexican restaurant, however, recent visits have us frequenting other places. The last time my husband and I were there was ridiculous. We sat at the bar, there was another couple there already eating and drinking. We waited 15 minutes, no bartender, no one offered us so much as a water. Servers passing by never stopped to see if they could help or maybe find who was supposed to be behind the bar. Prices keep going up and up and service is non existent. Very sad.

I'm usually not super critical, but I have no idea how this place stays in business. We were seated in a hallway, and there were people zooming back and forth the whole time. It was odd the hostess chose to seat us there, since we had a toddler in a high chair. The place seemed dirty and the restroom WAS dirty. But the real issue is the food. Every item was a flour tortilla wrapped around mealy textured ground beef with a different sauce. (I guess to differentiate between, say a taco, burrito, enchilada.) Taco Bell is more authentic (and tastes better.) The kicker was both my husband and my daughter had "digestive issues" all the next day. The one star goes to our server, who was nice and did her job pretty well.

Decent food, but nothing worth making an extra special trip for. The service SUCKED! I mentioned to our first waiter that it was my first time at Plaza Azteca & like any curious Yelper, asked about the food and drink specials. He couldn't fully communicate to me what the specials were, only that they were "all good". We asked about the drink specials, in particular, the mojitos. He told us it was made with pama; we asked him what pama was (I'm thinking it's a special melon or something comparable to a fruit I've had before), and he replied "I don't know"; what he meant was pomegranate. There's no true order as to who the heck your server is; its kind of grab them as they go free-for-all. The second waitress wasn't any better. We had to continuously ask for basics like water & napkins. When I placed my order, TWICE I told, her NO BEANS, ONLY RICE. So what comes out? Beans and rice. When I reminded her that I didn't want beans, she looked totally uninterested and went to the next table. My plate was taken back by a runner, and I must say, I was extra impressed at the turnaround time to make piping hot food the way I initially requested (maybe 5minutes). The best part was watching Mr. Guac make our guacamole. Not the best guacamole, but whatever. There are several Plaza Azteca restaurants in Hampton Roads, but I seriously doubt I'll jump at the chance to try another location. Hopefully my fellow Yelpers will have a more pleasant experience.

I am a big fan of Mexican restaurants, and this was first visit to this particular Plaza Azteca. My boyfriend and I came at a particular busy time, but we were seated immediately. We waited a few minutes before being approached by a waiter to take our drink orders. I have never had a margarona before, so my boyfriend and I both tried them. We got our waters first, then waited a few more minutes before getting our drinks and ordering our food. Also, it was weird that we didn't get the queso sauce for the chips and needed to ask for it; most other restaurants give it to us right away. Our food came out quickly. I ordered fish tacos and my boyfriend ordered shrimp tacos. Both were very delicious and came with mango salsa. I also had Mexican rice with my tacos, which was okay. Overall, I was satisfied with my visit.

I'm so sad to write this review but it had to be done. Came here with my family this evening about 10 of us. Everything was great as usual until the manager came over 1.5 hours in and asked how much longer we would be because he had families waiting. We hadn't even signed our checks. My mom was hosting a Stella and dot for autism awareness which made him angry. I'm not sure why because we all got an entree drink and several appetizers. When I spoke with him he told me he pays 30,000 in taxes alone and needs to turn tables and that most people are here 1.5 hours tops when I shared we had been there 1.5 on the dot and hadn't even signed our checks I got "sorry if you thought I was rude" Really disappointed plaza I don't think I can come back. Sad since this is a favorite spot among my friends.

I've come to this place several times, they're always packed...the service is always slowish, the foods good though.....they like to seat parties of two at these mini booths next to the bathroom (they should be considered kids tables, avoid those, otherwise this place is worth the trip, the fried chicken burritos & flautas are the same great!. Also ask for white sauce as it's not brung out with the salsa anymore.

Okay, so this place still continues to have some stellar food but the prices... OMG!!! They went up like a moooooo. :-( My typical dinner, the Steak Azteca, went from $12 to $15/16, as with all the other steak meals. It's hit or miss with how they cook the steak to my liking so I tried their Fajitas Vallarta dinner: a mix of chorizo (Mexican sausage), grilled chicken and steak. My meal was absolutely delicious! Throw some green sauce on there for some spice and two weeks of working out went out the window and I smiled the entire time. I straight crushed my meal. This was a definite four star experience but I was so appalled at the price increases I doubt I'll ever order the Steak Azteca again. Damn!

As always I'm impressed with the food... delish! As for this location, not so much. The point of calling in your order is top avoid the wait and I ended up waiting overt 40 mins for something that takes 10 mins to prepare according to staff. Apparently the computer not send the order back and what had me heated is that I'm the only one waiting on takeout and the were not busy. Why would you keep looking at me and not check on my food!? I had to ask what's taking so long. ...really? I definitely recommend the Haygood location or dine in.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize.
